Storm Ion Max Pearl Bowling Ball

I Drilled the new ion max pearl using a 5x4x2 layout. The goal with this is to give me some length while still having the sharp hook down lane. This ball does not disappoint! I believe this ball will be used on the fresh oil more than people think. It allows you to out surface on it and keep your angles in front of you, or keep the polish on it and create more angle down lane. This ball is the 2nd or 3rd ball I pull out of my bag due to the ultra-strong NeX Pearl cover and the mega tumbly element Max AI core. This ball is guaranteed to be a hit!

In my opinion, the Ion Max is the best big asym, slow response ball in Storm’s product line. For many, especially one-hand, medium (to low) rev players like myself, I really can’t throw urethane once the patterns stretch even a little. The original Ion Max was the perfect urethane like ball motion for me. But when the Ion Max gets to be too much and too early, what do you go to? It seemed like there was a gap from the Ion Max to the next reactives down. But now that gap has been filled with the Ion Max Pearl. It features a pearl version of the NRG coverstock with Power Edge factory finish which gets the ball through the front easier than the solid, but NRG is still a pretty strong cover, so it doesn’t blow through it. The core in the Ion Max Pearl is the exact same as the Ion Max- Element Max AI. For the 15#, it has 2.47 RG (low) so that also helps it get started and not miss the midlane. The dif is pretty high at 0.055 with a medium intermediate dif 0.014 which gives it plenty of flare potential to be strong in the midlane and still continuous down lane. All this adds up to a cleaner, quicker response than the Ion Max, but still doesn’t over push, reads the midlane and has plenty of back end motion. The Ion Max Pearl fits right in the Storm’s new Tournament Collection near the top of the arsenal. It’s essentially the 2nd ball down from the top of your bag and I’d say is in between the big balls (Ion Max, Vengeance, RST Hyperdrive Solid) and the medium balls (Bionic, Rockstar, Ion Pro Solid). I drilled mine 4.5” pin to PAP x 4” pin to PSA x 2” pin to VAL.

Ion Max Pearl Ball Review The storm Ion Max Pearl features the Element Max AI Core which was used on the orginal Ion Max but wrapped with the NRG Pearl Coverstock RG-2.47 Diff-.055 PSA Diff-.014 Surface-Poweredge Polish You will notice the Ion Max Pearl is very quick reving with a powerful midlane roll. I feel like the Ion Max Pearl will be a great compliment to the orginal Ion Max and Bionic. On fresh longer patterns you can start with Ion Max Solid or Bionic then once the lane transitions then you can jump into the Ion Max Pearl. I also compared the Phaze 2 Pearl to the Ion Max Pearl. I found the Phaze 2 Pearl to be cleaner with a sharper backend.

The new Ion Max Pearl features the NRG pearl coverstock finished with Power Edge, and the Element Max A.I. core found in the Ion Max Solid. At 15 pounds the Ion Max Pearl has a low RG of 2.47, a differential of .055 and an intermediate differential of .014. I drilled my Ion Max Pearl with my usual 5x5x2 drilling putting the pin above my bridge. This is the same drilling I used on the Ion Max Solid. The Pearl version is a nice step down from the solid version. The pearl is about 3 to 5 feet longer than the solid with a much quicker response time to friction. Overall hook is about the same, but the motion is much different. The solid hooked early and had a very mellow backend reaction. The pearl is much cleaner and has a strong arcing motion on the backend. As strong as the Ion Max Pearl is, it still needs to be able to see friction to have success. So, when the Ion Max Solid starts losing energy and leaves those weak corner pins, that is the time to bring out the Ion Max Pearl.

As a right-handed tweener with a PAP of 1" up and 3.5" over, 14 mph ball speed, and about 330 RPM, the Storm Ion Max Pearl has been a great addition to my league arsenal. I bowl mostly on a 40' house shot on synthetic lanes with built-in friction, and this ball matches up very well with that type of condition. The Ion Max Pearl gets very clean through the front of the lane, which helps it store a lot of energy, especially as the lanes begin to transition. For my speed and rev rate, the ball doesn’t skid too far but instead makes a strong, continuous move off the breakpoint. The backend reaction is noticeable without being overly flippy, giving me a lot of confidence when opening up my angles. What I like most is how well it retains energy and drives through the pins. Even on slight misses to the outside friction, the ball recovers well and continues through the deck with excellent carry. Overall, the Ion Max Pearl is a fantastic option for tweener-style bowlers looking for a clean, responsive pearl that creates angle and strong pin carry on typical house conditions.

The Ion Max is a ton of ball and often it’s too much in the fronts. The Ion Max Pearl is clean and strong on the backend. It has a distinct hook stop motion which is great for hook and a measure of control on the fresh. A lot of times asym pearls are the best option on the fresh, especially on house, because they get through the fronts a little and then don’t over jerk the backend. As long as the ball isn’t burning up in the fronts you’ll carry the corners plenty. This ball will be a great cliff buster or heavy oil option for almost all bowlers.

This ball is designed to be a nice step down from the Ion Max while still handling those heavier oil conditions. I tested this ball on my typical 43ft house condition. On the fresh, I saw a really strong up front read and midlane movement while being pretty controllable down the lane. This ball wasn't designed to be very angular but I think this is what sets it apart from other balls in the lineup. Compared to the Ion Max, I did see a good amount more length with very similar overall shape. What still makes this one a little difficult for me to use more is the lack of front oil on my house pattern. When I missed up the lane, it tended to hook early and go high and when I missed right into the dry, it either over hooked or had trouble getting the corners out. For the fresh, this strength ball would not be my first ball choice. As the lanes broke down and I was able to move into the middle part of the lane, I saw overall better shape left to right. Misses in held a little more in the oil while misses right blended the lanes a little better. What I did find was the power edge polish was creating too much length for the 43ft pattern and was too smooth to get the right read down the lane. My next move was to touch the surface with a light 2000 abralon pad to get rid of some of the polish a touch. This made a big difference. I was better midlane roll and better continuation down lane. Shots that were having trouble going through the pins the right way now went through great. Surface changes matter, no matter how small they are! I recommend this ball if you love the Ion Max and want a similar shape that is cleaner that will keep the ball in front of you more. This ball will not be that great opening the lane up if the oil volume is not high enough. Consider purchasing a Storm Equinox if you are looking for more length and angular motion instead.

The Ion Max Pearl is SPI’s newest Premier line piece. The IMP features the same Element Max AI core found in the Ion Max but is now wrapped in NRG pearl. The IMP feels very similar to balls like the Altered Reality and Eternity.
